The memories of the church's origin are intertwined with legends, but it is undeniable - in 1814, the inhabitants of Novosel can worship in an Orthodox church that was built, hidden in the ground and far from the eyes of the convert. The church is three-aisled, almost completely dug into the ground, and has a men's and a women's section, entered through separate doors. It was partially rebuilt in the period 1845-1850 and extensively rebuilt after the Chirpan earthquake of 1930. Sadly, however, very little remains of it, frescoes are missing, some of the icons have been destroyed, others preserved under less than favourable conditions, and the two capitals with stone sculpture in existence until 1984 are also missing.
