The territory of the Local Action Group “Samokov” completely coincides with the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Samokov, which is located in Western Bulgaria, South-Western Planning Region (NUTS 2), in the southern part of the Sofia region and is the fourth largest municipality in the country, after the municipalities Sliven, Stolichna and Dobrich and is also one of the constituent municipalities in the Sofia region.
The territory of the Local Initiative Group “Samokov” is located on an area of 1,209,859 km2, which represents 17.09% of the territory of the Sofia Region and 5.96% of the territory of the Southwestern Region. The borders of Samokov municipality are as follows:
To the northeast – the municipality of Ihtiman;
To the east – the municipalities of Kostenets and Dolna Banya;
To the south – the municipalities of Yakoruda and Belitsa;
In the southwest – Rila municipality and Kyustendil region;
To the west – the municipalities of Dupnitsa and Sapareva Banya (Kyustendil region);
In the northwest – the municipalities of Radomir and Pernik (Perniška region);
To the north – Sofia Municipality.
The administrative center of the municipality of Samokov is the city of Samokov, which is located 60 km from the capital – Sofia, 10 km from the Borovets resort complex, 8 km from one of the entrances to the Rila National Park, 29 km from the mineral springs in Sapareva banya, 14 km from the mineral springs of Belchin banya, 27 km from the balneological complex in Dolna banya and 12 km from the Iskar dam.
The border checkpoints with the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Greece are also located at a relatively close distance.
A total of 25 settlements are included in the composition of the “Samokov” MIG, of which the municipal center is the city of Samokov and the following 24 villages: Alino, Beli Iskar, Belchin, Govedartsi, Gorni okol, Gutsal, Dolni okol, Dospey, Dragushinovo, Zlokuchene, Klisura, Kovachevtsi, Madzhare, Mala tsarkva, Maritsa, Novo selo, Popovyane, Prodanovtsi, Raduil, Rayovo, Relyovo, Shipochane, Shiroki dol and Yarlovo.
According to NSI data, as of 31.12.2020, 36,124 people live in the settlements of the Samokov municipality, with the municipal center being inhabited by nearly 70% of the municipality’s residents – 24,942 people, and 11,182 people living in the villages.
The territory of the municipality of Samokov has a favorable transport and communication location in relation to two Trans-European transport corridors that pass through the territory of the country, which in turn compensates for the lack of direct service from first-class roads from the Republican road network.
The territory of LAG “Samokov” is served only by road transport, and the total length of the road network is 236.6 km, with slightly more than half of the roads being second-class and third-class roads – 156.1 km.
