The territory of the “Belene – Nikopol” LAG is administratively part of the North-West Planning District (NUTS 2), Pleven District (NUTS 3). The total area of the territory of the Local Initiative Group “Belen – Nikopol” is 701.63 km2, with the municipality of Nikopol having a larger area. The total number of settlements for the “Belene – Nikopol” LAG is 20, of which 6 are in the municipality of Belene and the remaining 14 in the municipality of Nikopol, and the total population is 17,115 people, of which 9,394 people are in the municipality of Belene and 7,721 people are in the municipality of Nikopol .
The geographical characteristics of the two municipalities making up the “Belene – Nikopol” LAG differ.
The municipality of Belene is located in the Svishtovo-Belene lowland, in the central part of the Danube plain, next to the Danube river, and in terms of territory and population it is one of the small municipalities in Bulgaria. The municipality of Belene consists of a total of 6 settlements – the municipal center of Belene and five villages – Dekov, Tatari, Petokladentsi, Kulina voda and Byala voda. The municipality of Belene borders the following municipalities:
To the west with the municipality of Nikopol;
To the east with the municipality of Svishtov;
To the south with Levski municipality.
The municipality occupies a territory of 285,046 dka, of which 14,126 dka are urbanized territory. The municipal center – the city of Belene is located 60 km from the regional center – Pleven and 220 km from the capital – Sofia. The nearest port and border checkpoint is located in the town of Svishtov. The city of Belene is a Bulgarian Danube city that did not develop as a port, and the main reason for this is that it is located on a wide Danube arm, which is relatively shallow and of variable depth and is not suitable for industrial shipping.
Opposite the town of Belene is the Belene Danube Archipelago, with the waterway and the state border passing on the northern side of the islands. An operational ferry connection with the Republic of Romania has been built near Belene from the city of Nikopol to the city of Turnu Magurele, a port and border crossing function in the city of Svishtov.
The population of the municipality of Belene as of 2020 is a total of 9,394 people, which constitutes 3.24% of the population of the Pleven region.
The municipality of Nikopol is located in the northeastern part of the Pleven and part of the Danube plain and occupies a total area of 415.9 km2. The municipality of Nikopol borders the following municipalities:
To the south with the municipality of Pleven;
To the east with the municipality of Belene;
To the west with Gulyantsi municipality;
To the north with the Danube river and one of the industrial centers of the Republic of Romania known in Europe – the town of Turnu Magurele.
The population of the municipality of Nikopol as of 2020 is 7,721 people, and according to the administrative-territorial division of the country, the municipality of Nikopol is located in the Pleven region and includes 14 settlements – the municipal center the city of Nikopol and the villages: Zhernov, Evlogievo, Musalievo, Debovo, Asenovo, Novachene, Batsova Mahala, Sanadinovo, Cherkovitsa, Dragash voivoda, Vabel, Ljubenovo and Lozitsa.
The city of Nikopol is located on the right bank of the Danube River, on a highly rugged flat and hilly terrain. It is located 57 km northeast of the regional center – Pleven and 217 km from the capital – Sofia.
Two roads from the republican road network lead to Nikopol municipality – from the west, road II-34 in the direction of Pleven and Gulyantsi, and from the south, II-52 in the direction of Belene and Svishtov.
