Ceramics is one of the most ancient crafts in the Bulgarian lands, and the Troyan ceramics is of particular importance for the Bulgarian lifestyle and culture. It is famous for its varied patterns and for the craftsmanship that every apprentice must master in order to be able to make it. The most characteristic vessels created by the craftsmen in Troyan are: plates, small and large casseroles, bardouches and pitchers. In the past, and even nowadays, the vessels and souvenirs of the Troyan pottery are painted with household motifs, elements of folk clothing and nature. The most characteristic patterns of Troyan pottery are: the wheat class, which has a special place in our folklore, butterfly, gaitans, limbs, peacock's eye and others. Troyan pottery is mostly found in the range of soft earth tones - yellow, green and brown. In recent years, however, with the advent of modern schools, the colours have become more varied and different variations of the famous „Trojan pattern“ have been developed, incorporating the colours blue and orange. The decoration of Trojan pottery is of three main types - engraved, incised and plastic.
