Samokov undoubtedly occupies a worthy place in Bulgarian cultural history, and with the establishment of the museum collection in 1930 in the town was laid the beginning of professional activities with the cultural and historical heritage of this Renaissance town. In 1938 the first ethnographic exhibition was organized and in 1940 the museum building was built according to the project of architect Yu. Yurdanov. This was the first building in Bulgaria designed for a museum, and the museum collections are completed with emblematic works of Samokov's zoographers - icons and prints; with works of artistic crafts; with documents, photographs, contemporary art, finds from archaeological excavations.
The museum expositions in the Historical Museum are 5 in total, the most famous of which are: Exposition "Samokov - Spirit and Metal" and Exposition "Samokov Art School".
