Protected zone “Island Lakut” encompasses a group of 3 larger permanent islands (Lakut, Gradina and Palets) and several smaller temporary islands, formed during low water, in the Bulgarian section of the Danube, the river itself and a floodplain poplar plantation. Lakut Island is the largest of the group, covered with scrub and woody vegetation - mostly willow and poplar. At low water, sand spits and several smaller islets form between it and the neighbouring Gradina and Palets Islands.
Island Lakut is of global importance as a permanent resting place for the endangered Dalmatian pelican and lesser cormorant, which winter on the island's sand spits. It is also one of the most important nesting sites of the sea eagle along the Danube, and the island complex is a suitable resting and feeding place for a variety of waterfowl, including the lesser spotted eagle, bellbird and great cormorant.
