By the decree of the Forestry Committee, the management of the National Park “Central Balkan” was established with headquarters in the town of Troyan and an office in the town of Karlovo in 1991, but the management of the park in Troyan was closed in 1999. The National Park has the European Diploma, the international status of a Biosphere Reserve and is part of the PAN Park network. The purpose of its conservation designation is to preserve in the long-term for the benefit of society complexes of self-regulating ecosystems and their intrinsic species diversity, habitats of rare and endangered species and communities, characteristic and remarkable landscapes and objects of non-living nature that are of world importance for science and culture. According to the designation order and the Management Plan, bats, large mammals, small mammals, plants, birds, invertebrates, fish and amphibians are protected.
