The Central Rila Reserve is part of the Rila National Park and as a territory it is the most extensive reserve in Bulgaria and on the Balkans and ranks among the reserves in Europe with the largest area. It was established in 1992 to preserve the ecosystems in the subalpine and alpine parts of the mountain in their original form. There are numerous peaks on the territory of the reserve, including the highest Musala, as well as the peaks - Golyam Skakavets, Deno, Malak Skakavets and Mancho Peak. The valleys of the Beli Iskar, Maritsa and Levi Iskar rivers, the Musalensky and Marichinite lakes, as well as numerous natural attractions such as caves, rock formations, waterfalls, etc. are also within the park's boundaries.
After the establishment of the Central Rila Reserve, several other reserves - "Golyam Skakavets" and "Marichini Lakes", which are on the UNESCO list "Biosphere and Man", for biosphere reserves, are included in its total area
