Reserve “Steneto” was declared a nature reserve in 1979 and over the years has changed its boundaries many times, currently occupying an area of 3 578 ha and is one of the largest in the National park "Central Balkan" and is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The number of bird species found on the territory of the reserve is the highest compared to all other reserves in Stara Planina mountain. The canyons of the Kumanitsa River and the Dry River are a sanctuary for the brown bear, and the fauna diversity is complemented by many more species of large mammals represented by reptiles and insects, and in total the reserve is home to about 100 animals included in various lists of protected animals. The reserve is also distinguished by the exceptional beauty and diversity of natural forms, chasms and caves. Of the plants, the most popular are the Cossack juniper, the rabbit tree, the sycamore and others.
