The Kitka Reserve is located in the Belen island group of the Danube River and was declared a reserve with a total area of 27.59 ha in 1981 in order to preserve the vegetation - willow and poplar forests, in its natural state. Another reason for declaring the reserve was that sea eagles were found on the territory of the present reserve.
The reserve is located in the northern part of the Belene Island on the Danube River, and in the immediate vicinity there is the Supported Reserve "Persinski Blata".
The territory of the reserve has international status - it is included in the Ramsar Convention.
