Persina Nature Park was declared on 04.12.2000 with a total area of 21 762,2 ha. The Nature Park is unique in Bulgaria and its designation aims at preserving and restoring the Danube wetlands and preserving the natural state of the numerous islands. The islands in the park are divided into two main groups – the Nikopol Island Group and the Belenski Island Complex. The largest Bulgarian Danube island – Persina, which gave the name to the nature park, is located in the Persina NP. The uniqueness and great significance of the Belen Islands Complex is the reason why the park was declared the largest Ramsar site in Bulgaria. Persina Nature Park is one of the fifty ornithologically important sites in Bulgaria, part of the European ecological network NATURA 2000.
