The Troyan Monastery is not only the largest monastery in the Stara Planina, but also the third largest spiritual centre in Bulgaria. As early as in 1830 it was declared an Stavropegial Monastery, which status it retains to this day, and the monastery itself is a cultural monument of national importance. The monastic chronicle of the Holy Monastery of Troyan testifies that it was built in 1600. Troyan Monastery was a hotbed of Bulgarian education and literature, and the first monastic school was opened here in 1765, and in 1869 it grew into a secular school. In 1871, the monastery became the first monastery in the world. In 1871 Vasil Levski founded the first monastic revolutionary committee in the country. The Troyan monastery, besides being a religious, educational and rebellious hearth, is also famous for its developed agriculture, animal husbandry and especially fruit growing.
Today, in the monastery church, is the tomb of the last Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim (1914-2012). On August 15 is the Feast of the "Uspenie Bogorodichno“ , which is the monastery's feast day, thousands of pilgrims from the country and abroad flock to the village, and at the same time a large craft fair with a history of more than 150 years is held near the monastery walls.
