Troyan is one of the municipalities through which passes the ancient road "Via Trayana" - an ancient thoroughfare connecting Rome with the Eastern provinces of the Empire and the Middle East. It is among the longest and most well-studied Roman roads in Bulgaria. The first Roman road constructions on already used Thracian roads date back to the reign of Emperor Nero, but the final laying of the road is associated with the name of Emperor Trayan. Along the entire length of the road, from Escus to Philippopolis, numerous road stations, settlements, fortifications and watchtowers were built, where military contingents were stationed, whose main purpose was to monitor and defend this important Roman trade and military route.
