The reserve was declared in 1983 with a total area of 1 610 ha, with the aim of protecting several separate ecosystems, as well as rock and karst formations. This reserve is home to one of the largest deposits of yew, but over 20 endemic species have been identified, 13 Bulgarian and 7 Balkan. The only locality of Urum's spittleberry, Siberian juniper and blueberry is located here. The animal world is relatively rich, with more than 20 species of mammals, a large number of birds and others.
