Milka Reserve and Kitka Reserve are part of the Persina Nature Park. The reserve is located on the island of the same name in the Danube River on the territory of the municipality of Belene. The island is entirely covered with floodplain forests and was declared a reserve in 1948 to protect primary forests, mainly of white elm, which provide habitat for protected bird species. All activities are forbidden on its territory, except those carried out for scientific and educational purposes. Milka Reserve is an important habitat for the sea eagle. This reserve is also included in the Ramsar Convention.
