Rila National Park has a total area of over 80 000 ha and falls within the scope of 4 districts and 11 municipalities including the municipality of Samokov. Rila National Park is located in the Rila Mountains with the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula - Musala Peak (2925 m). It is the largest in Bulgaria and one of the largest European parks and it covers the most protected from the impact of human activity parts of the mountain. There are about 100 peaks with an altitude over 2000 m, over 120 glacial lakes and 4 Reserves included in the Rila National Park. On the territory of the park there are a huge number of plant and animal species protected by Bulgarian and European legislation and many unique and rare habitats, which determines its huge conservation importance and makes it an exceptional place for tourism.
