In 1876, a Bashibozush horde entered Novo Selo, and one of the many who came was Kolyo Todorov Mateev, who was a gunsmith and decided to break the slave chains and show that he was a free Bulgarian. For this boldness, Novosel Balkanji Jovo was caught and cut to pieces, and at the place where his blood flowed, today there is a fountain with two monuments - the central one with the image of the martyr and another one with two images of a lion. The fountain-monument was built to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Novosel Uprising by Petko Netsolov.
